Font Pairing

Font Pairing Project: Evelyn Ochoa

What does it mean to create a font pairing?

Font pairing is the mixture or combinations that work and make sense, which means that when pairing them there is unity and variety.

What are the four assignments you chose to do? Write the name of the assignment and describe your design for each.

  • Assignment 1(What comes easy Won’t Last): Since I couldn’t use a photo as a background I created a gradient background that began at a yellow-orange type of color and transitioned to a turquoise color. I used 2 different fonts. One was cursive and more detailed so I made the other one a simple straight font, all in caps.

  • Assignment 3 (City, Country): For the background I used a photo of a specific spot of the city, which has a bridge and one of its 4 famous rivers. I chose a photo of Cuenca, a city in Ecuador, at night. For the font of the city I chose a cursive font and made the size small. For the font of the country I chose a serif font, made the size bigger than the city and I bent it with the warp filter to make it wider.

  • Assignment 4 (Famous quote): For the background I used a photo of a chain hanging from a piece of green rotting wood because it related to the quote in the sense that it talks about being slaves of the words we say. I used 3 types of fonts. For the words “slaves” and “masters” I used a fancy, gothic-looking font to make them stand out. For the rest of the words I used two types of san serif fonts. One of the san serif fonts was more spaced and a thinner stroke. The other one had normal spacing and a little bit darker stroke.

  • Assignment 7 (These are the good old days): I used a brownish-pinkish color as a background. I used the symbol stamp tool to put some curves on the upper and lower edges of the design to make it look vintage. I used 3 fonts. To emphasize “good old” I used a fancy font called Candy Inc. For the rest of the words I alternated between serif and san serif fonts.

Which assignment would you say is your BEST font pairing and why?

My best assignment was assignment number 4 because I liked the paring of that gothic font with the simpler fonts. Plus I liked the phrase.

Which assignment would you say is your Least Successful font pairing and why?

My least favorite font was assignment number 1 because it is the simplest one. I often like complicated designs or more detailed.

How would you describe the font pairing process? What makes a font pairing so difficult?

It was a difficult process because making two fonts work takes time and thought. Not all fonts match with each other. Even if two fonts are beautiful on there own that doesn’t mean they’ll be beautiful matched together because they may create a saturated space in the design and it will look like too much.
